FIELD: physics; communication.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to assigning data transmission speed of a communication return line (RL) in a high-speed data transmission system (1 xEV-DO) as a function of quality of the forward communication line (FL). Generation of the speed profile for several access terminals (ATs) is done through correction of transition probabilities, associated with a data transmission speed distribution algorithm. According to the invention, quality of the forward communication line is determined; transition probability of data transmission speed is selected, related to the said quality; a random number is generated for comparison with the selected transition probability; the current data transmission speed of the return communication line is increased if the random number is less than the selected transition probability. The current data transmission speed of the return communication line is less than or equal to the maximum data transmission speed of the return communication line, defined as a function of quality of the forward communication line.

EFFECT: design of a method, which optimises the maximum carrying capacity and the suitable quality of service.
