FIELD: physics, communications.
SUBSTANCE: disclosed embodiments relate to allocation of carriers and controlling said carriers in multiple carrier communication systems. In certain embodiments, the number of carriers allocated to an access terminal on a direct communication line can be determined by an access network, and the number of carriers allocated to an access terminal on a return communication line can be based on a joint process between the access terminal and the access network. In other embodiments, the number of carriers allocated to an access terminal on a return communication line can also be determined by an access network, e.g. based on scheduling information received from an access terminal.
EFFECT: design of efficient and reliable multiple carrier communication systems.
