FIELD: woodworking industry.

SUBSTANCE: method of defining categories of the forested area state by its remote sensing with a spectrometer and measuring coefficients of spectral radiance in spectral bands of green (G) and red (R) sections of the visible range, calculation of vitality index g = G/G+R and red destruction r = R/G+R, calculation of the state function and its calibrating according to the measurements of the reference sections. Pictures of the forest sectors in the same spectral bands are obtained simultaneously with the spectral radiance coefficient measurements. Programme method is applied to calculate the square of the canopy relief (Sp) images in the green band of the visible spectrum. The stand density ("П") is determined by the relation of the relief square (Sp) to the geometrical square (S) of the processed section. The category of the forested area state is evaluated on the basis of the product "П"×g and the calibration function. G, R are the average values of the forested area spectral radiance in the green and red bands of the visible spectrum.

EFFECT: method allows for the improvement of the forest categorisation accuracy by quantitative calculation of the product of the tree crowns colouration and the stand density defined by the images obtained synchronously in the green sector of the visible spectrum.
