SUBSTANCE: invention relates to optical devices. The structure 10 of a protective automatically darkening filter has two weakly twisted liquid crystal cells 26, 30, inserted in the space between three displaced polarisers 24, 28, 32. The first, second and third polarisers have interelated directions of polarisation. Direction of polarisation of at least one polariser, first or third is displaced from axis which is normal to the direction of polarisation of the second polariser.

EFFECT: structure increases uniformity of darkening of the filter in a wide angle of vision of the user, and also improves visibility through the filter owing to reduced oscillation of darkening.
