FIELD: physics; optics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to measurement of optical characteristics of scattering media, for example biological media. The method involves taking measurements for two different thickness values of a sample along the axis of the light beam incident on the sample. The recorded two values of thickness of the sample are used to derive values of absorption and scattering coefficients of the sample by solving a system of equations derived from the axial radiation transfer model. The photometric module for determining optical characteristics of streams of liquid or gaseous scattering substances is made in form of a component part of a main channel, which is connected to branches of different cross section. A radiation source and a detector are fitted in each branch.

EFFECT: invention simplifies determination of absorption and scattering coefficients in a sample.
