FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used for identifying defects in electrically conducting objects, for example cladding of fuel cells of atomic reactors. In the pulsed eddy current inspection method, instantaneous amplitudes of the output pulse of the transmission differential transducer are displayed, where said amplitudes are measured at two different time instants on two mutually perpendicular axes in form of a curve. Part of the curve formed on the section between the maximum and the minimum of the signal from the defect is selected. The sign of the curvature of the section of the curve in the neighbourhood of the origin is determined by approximating with a 2nd order polynomial of the form ax2+bx+c and the type of defect is determined from the sign of the coefficient.
EFFECT: increased reliability and information content of eddy current flaw detection of cylindrical objects, for example fuel cells of nuclear reactors.
