SUBSTANCE: modulator comprises substrate, multiple individually addressed light-modulating elements, which are arranged on substrate, diffuser and optical compensation structure, which differs from diffuser. Diffuser and optical compensating structure are arranged between substrate and multiple light-modulating elements. Modulator may comprise multiple various optical compensating structures, at least one of them comprises diffuser. Modulator may contain differing first and second optical compensating structures. Optical compensating structure may be selected from black mask, colour filter, anti-reflecting layer, multiple diffusing elements, grid of microlenses, holographic film and diffraction optical element. Method includes production of diffuser on substrate, making optical compensating structure and multiple light-modulating elements on diffuser and optical compensating structure.
