SUBSTANCE: invention relates to multichannel encoders, for example multichannel sound encoders which use parametric representation of three-dimensional sound. A method is described for encoding input signals (from CH1 to CH3; 400-450) in a multichannel encoder (5; 15) for generating corresponding input data containing output mixed signals (610, 620) together with supplementary parametric data (600). The method involves a first step for step down mixing input signals (from CH1 to CH3; 400-450) in order to generate corresponding output mixed signals (610, 620), and a second step for processing input signals (from CH1 to CH3; 400-450) during step down mixing in order to generate parametric data (600) which supplement mixed signals (610, 620). Processing input signals (from CH1 to CH3; 400-450) involves input into mixed signals (610, 620) of information which is used during subsequent decoding of output mixed signals (610, 620) and parametric data (600) for determining at least parametric data and thereby enabling restoration of presentation of input signals from (CH1 to CH3; 400-450). Encoders are presented for use in an encoder (5; 15) for processing signals.

EFFECT: improved quality of decoded multichannel audio information.
