FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to metal processing industry, and namely to steel item hardening process. In order to improve processing rate, item quality and to enlarge the range of processed items, surface layer of the item is heated with local concentrated energy source with further cooling owing to heat removal to the item body; at that, surface layer of the item is heated in vacuum owing to the energy concentrated in cathode spots of vacuum arc discharge, which move along the item surface; vacuum arc discharge burns between the item being cathode and anode.
EFFECT: use of vacuum arc discharge allows increasing vacuum hardening of steel items of various geometrical shape.
