FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: procedure for production of magnesium chloride from MgO consists of loading charge into electric furnace; charge contains magnesium oxide and carbonaceous material; further, charge is heated to temperature 800-900°C, blasted with chlorine and produced liquid magnesium chloride is tapped. Coal granules are used as carbonaceous material in charge. Charge is heated with radiation of one or several lasers by shifting radiation along surface of charge; charge overheating and evaporation of produced magnesium chloride are eliminated. The installation corresponds to an electric furnace consisting of a stack, hearth and roof lined with refractory materials, of a charging facility, of a gas outlet, of tuyeres for chlorine blasting, and of a tap-hole for magnesium chlorine tapping. One or several lasers are arranged on the roof and(or) walls of the stack; the lasers are equipped with devices for shifting radiation along surface of charge.
EFFECT: reduced capital expenditures and prime cost of magnesium chlorine production.
