FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: when determining width of a banknote, individual calibration response levels are given for each light-emitting diode segment. The given levels characterise the position of the banknote relative the measuring light-emitting diode line. The response value of receivers is measured while moving the banknote and is compared with calibration levels. The number and position of completely and partially covered segments are determined. Coordinates of edges are determined using the obtained values, which enables to calculate the width of the banknote. The device has controlled position sensors of the edges of the banknote which include a line of light-emitting diode segments and oppositely lying receivers which are formed by separate areas whose field of vision collectively covers all light-emitting diode segments. Received signals are converted to a digital code and are processed using a processor. To increase speed of operation, the device uses a cascode circuit of connecting optical transistors with summation of current through the load.
