FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medicine, oncology, and can be used for treatment of locally extended rectal cancer. For this purpose in preoperative period the tumor is affected with distance-type gamma-irradiation with single focal dose of 5 Gy, at dose ionization maximum of 100 cGy/min. The course of radiation treatment is 5 days. Thus in 1st, 3d and 5th days of radiation treatment 3-4 hours prior to irradiation a composite mixture of: (wt %) sodium alginate 46; 5-fluorouracil - 0.5; distilled water up to 100 ml is intrarectally administered.
EFFECT: method enables to improve immediate and long-term results of treatment, to reduce possibility and severity of early and late radiation reactions of organs and tissues within the irradiation field, to reduce total and hematologic toxicity.
