FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: method of producing organophilic bentonite involves mixing bentonite powder and an aqueous solution of a quaternary ammonium salt - alkylbenzyldimethyl ammonium chloride at room temperature and subsequent drying. The aqueous solution of alkylbenzyldimethyl ammonium chloride used has alkyl hydrocarbon radicals C₈ - C₂₂ with concentration of 3.6-5.0 wt % and mass ratio of bentonite to alkylbenzyldimethyl ammonium chloride of 10:(0.5-0.7). Mixing is done for 10 minutes. The mixture is held for 12 hours and then taken for drying.

EFFECT: invention improves structural properties of organophilic bentonite, cuts on the amount of quaternary ammonium salt for its preparation and enables use of bentonite with low exchange capacity.
