FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used to reduce concentration of the molecular form of radioactive iodine in water coolants of atomic power stations (APS) and process solutions when processing spent nuclear fuel. The material is prepared from a cationite which is modified through ion exchange with nickel or zinc ions. Content of the materials in the composite material is between 5% and 8%. The composite material is also treated with a hydrazine-hydrate solution in order to reduce 15-20% of the total amount of nickel or zinc in the material to metallic state, where 80-85% nickel or zinc is in form of complexes with formula [M(N2H4)n]2+ (M - Ni, Zn; n = 4-6 for nickel and 3-4 for zinc).
EFFECT: low cost of material, thermal stability, high rate of conversion of the molecular form of radioactive iodine to its ionic forms in aqueous solutions.
