FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: mantle model with a solid core has a liquid-containing reservoir with a vertical axis of symmetry and a core suspended on a flexible element. The liquid used is mercury which is covered with a diaphragm. The diaphragm touches the walls of the reservoir and has a centre hole which bounds the free surface of the mercury. The core has an axis of symmetry and is partially immersed in the mercury. The top part of the core is connected to its bottom part by a rod whose diametre is smaller than these parts and passes through the hole in the diaphragm. The moment of mass of the core relative the bottom end of the flexible element is greater than the corresponding moment of mass of displaced liquid. Each of the said moments equals the product of the corresponding mass with the shortest distance from the centre of this mass to the flexible element.
EFFECT: demonstration of the effect of magnetic field on drift of the solid core of a planet.
