FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: images of standard and real defects radiographed on one picture are compared. On a controlled weld joint on which there may be slag inclusions, a similar standard-imitator having grooves with depth which is 1.5 times less than the maximum permissible depth of a defect of the slag inclusion type is installed along with a standard-imitator having grooves of different width but with the same depth which is equal to the maximum permissible depth of a real hollow defect (faulty fusion, air pockets, pores) in order to determine size in the direction of transillumination of slag inclusions displayed on the picture.
EFFECT: high reliability and accuracy of determining size of defects in the direction of transillumination.
