FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method of regenerating a nitrogen oxide catalytic neutraliser-accumulator placed in the exhaust pipe of an engine working on depleted combustion mixtures is realised by switching the engine from a mode of operation on a depleted combustion mixture with formation of depleted exhaust gases (EG) to a mode of operation on an enriched combustion mixture with formation of enriched exhaust gases and then returning the engine to the mode of operation with a depleted combustion mixture at the end of the regeneration process. When returning the engine to the mode of operation with a depleted combustion mixture, air is blown into the exhaust gas directly in front of the nitrogen oxide catalyst-accumulator. That way the composition of exhaust gases which is still rich is replaced by a stoichiometric or depleted composition for short period of time until depleted exhaust gases formed during operation of the engine on an enriched combustion mixture reach the nitrogen oxide neutraliser-accumulator.
EFFECT: invention increases efficiency of neutralising or reducing toxicity of exhaust gases when used primarily for regenerating catalytic neutralisers which have partially lost their accumulation capacity due to ageing.
