SUBSTANCE: method of processing a data word, comprising steps on which a data word is received, determination of whether the data word has a first length or second length, where the second length is longer than the first length. If it is determined that the data word has a first length, extension is performed through a data word sign to create a data word having a second length and the value is subtracted from an intermediate value of counting initial data bits of the data word having a second length in order to determine the final value of counting the initial data bits.

EFFECT: broader functionalities of devices owing to counting of zero or unit initial bits for different data word sizes, and cutting on equipment needed for counting zero or unit initial bits.
