FIELD: information technologies.

SUBSTANCE: multichannel audio coder (10) codes M-channel audio signal. Generation facility (110) generates the first coded M-channel signal, for instance, spatial stereophonic step-down mixing, for N-channel signal (N>M). Units (115, 116, 117) generate associatively related parametric data for the first M-channel signal relative to N-channel audio signal. The second M-channel signal, such as artistic stereo rerecording, is generated for N-channel signal. Then generator (123) generates modifying parametres for the second M-channel signal relative to the first M-channel signal. Unit (120) generates coded output signal containing the second M-channel signal, associatively related parametric data and modifying parametres. Generator (123) may dynamically choose between generation of modifying parametres as absolute modifying data or as relative modifying data relative to the second M-channel signal. Decoder (20) may perform reverse operation and may apply modifying parametres as absolute or relative modifying parametres depending on indication in received bit stream.

EFFECT: improved efficiency, quality and ratio of quality to speed of data transfer.
