FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: filter has series-arranged optically transparent systems using optically transparent dielectric substance and birefringent substance on molecules of liquid crystals, made and arranged similarly and which attenuate intensity of radiation passing through the systems. The arrangement of the system of optically transparent electrodes on the surface of each system is different. The surface of the dielectric substance has an orientation which match major axes of the molecules of the birefringent substances with the corresponding polarisation component of the passing radiation so that the scattering and/or reflection condition is satisfied for one or both polarisation components of the radiation. Refraction indices of the birefringent substance are close to refraction indices of the dielectric substance when the major axes of the molecules of liquid crystals lie along the direction of incident radiation and differ for one of the orthogonal polarisation components when the position of major axes of the molecules of liquid crystals change in the direction given by the orientation. When radiation intensity exceeds a given threshold, molecules of the birefringent substance change their orientation.
EFFECT: high efficiency, reduced loss and adaptability to glaring radiation sources.
