SUBSTANCE: invention relates to drive unit with ice articulated with uncontrolled automatically-started piston-type expansion machine. Drive unit with ice 18 is articulated with p.t.o.-shaft. Piston-type expansion machine 19 is articulated with crankshaft 8. P.t.o.-shaft is coupled via coupling 17 with crankshaft 8. Torque is transmitted from crankshaft 8 to p.t.o.-shaft. With inlet valve 2 closed, fluid medium is fed from device 9 via bypass valve 3 into inner space 6 of cylinders 1. Bypass vale 3 is arranged in parallel with inlet valve 2. Bypass valve 3 may be opened when inlet valve 2 and/or outlet valve 4 are closed. System pressure may increase in device 9 when inlet valve 2 is closed and bypass valve 3 of open. Method of operating drive unit articulated with expansion machine 19 consists in that fluid medium is heated and partially converted into vapor and/or gas state by IC exhaust heat. Fluid medium is directed via inlet valve 2 into inside space of cylinder 1. Piston 5 is actuated. With inlet valve 2 bypass valve 3 is opened to direct fluid medium into inner space 6.
EFFECT: starting expansion machine with no throwing-in of clutch in every braking or at zero torque.
