SUBSTANCE: using knowledge of its own bandwidth usage, a client can determine usage of the shared gateway by other clients of the local area network. Using all this information, i.e. the value of the full bandwidth of the shared gateway, the value of the actual usage of the shared gateway, and the value of its usage by other clients within the local area network, the client can correct or adjust background transmission of files in order to support actual data transmission through the shared gateway within a reasonable percentage of the full available bandwidth. That means the client will provide the priority for usage of the shared gateway by other computers of the local area network by regulating data transmission based on the value of usage of transmissions passing through the shared gateway.
EFFECT: obtaining information on the value of the full bandwidth of the shared gateway.
