FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: in the method, an image of part of space is obtained and then converted by a photodetector array to an array of values of electrical signals containing background signals and target plus background signals. Array components in which the useful signal exceeds a preset threshold are then identified. A background estimation signal is then generated from array components of the values of electrical signals. A target signal is then generated for elements of the target plus background group as the difference between the target plus background signal and the background estimation signal. Angular coordinates of the target are then determined.

EFFECT: reduced errors in determining coordinates of the energy centre of an image of a target.
