FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: composite detector is mounted on the middle part of a rope. Free ends of the rope are tied to winches of two floating devices. The rope is unwound and released to the bottom so that the detector forms a continuous sensitive area. The floating device is moved on a parallel course while scouring free ends of the rope with the winches. The floating device is then stopped and fixed. Free ends of the rope which tug the detector at the bottom are wound using the winches. The detector is kept at a constant distance from the bottom. The point of deviation from this constant is detected. Upon response of the detector, tugging is stopped and the location of the radioactive object is determined from the location of the component part of the detector which responded.

EFFECT: maximum continuous coverage of the sensitive area of the inspected bottom, accurate investigation of the surface topography, design of a device for implementing said method.
