FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method for photoconversion of retinal-containing protein involves converting the protein at room temperature from an initial state to an intermediate state through exposure to a first light pulse with wavelength in a range corresponding to the absorption region of the initial state, and then converting the protein back to the initial state through exposure to a second light pulse with wavelength in a range corresponding to the region in which there is absorption of the intermediate state and not the initial state. Duration of said light pulses is not longer than 50 ps and the time interval between said light pulses is not greater than 6 ps.
EFFECT: possibility of ultra-fast photoconversion of molecules of retinal-containing proteins at room temperature in a subpicosecond time scale, design of an optical logic element containing such a retinal-containing protein.
