FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: method of selecting the ratio between direct Raman amplification (DRA) factor Gf at the transmitting end of a fibre-optic transmission line and the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) at the receiving end of the fibre-optic transmission line which meets restrictions for real long lines. According to the method, the ratio is selected using a ROSNR control function. The function has the form of either a simplified equation or the form of one or more linear approximation functions for practical ranges of the DRA factor.

EFFECT: easy and efficient estimation of the required DRA in order to obtain the design value of OSNR and efficient OSNR control.
