FIELD: information technology.

SUBSTANCE: emergency telephone call is supported and routed to a shared safe response point (SSRP) in an Internet protocol (IP) based packet switched wireless communication network. An "Activate packet data protocol (PDP) context query" message is sent from user equipment to the network. The parameter in the "Activate PDP context query" message indicates that, that PDP context will be used to transmit the emergency call. An "Activate PDP context reception" message is returned from the support node to the user equipment. The "Activate PDP context reception" message confirms reception of the "Activate PDP context query" message and provides the address of the call status control function. The call set up request sent to the call status control function includes a coverage area identifier (CAI). The call status control function selects the SSRP at least partly based on that CAI which is included in the call set up request, and sends an emergency call to the selected SSRP.

EFFECT: supporting SSRP selection in 3G IP mobile communication networks based on the universal mobile telecommunication systems standard.
