SUBSTANCE: invention relates to screening of population of plants or parts of plants for availability of species in them that demonstrate lower discoloration of surface caused by damage compared to a reference plant or a part of a plant. A lettuce plant that demonstrates lower or absent discoloration of surface caused by damage may be produced by crossing of a plant with an access number to NCIMB 41454 or 41441 with another plant of the same type and testing posterity from crossing of plants by screening plants or their parts. Screening includes incubation of damaged surfaces to produce discoloration and to compare the observed discoloration on screened plants with discoloration observed on or in a reference plant or a part of a plant, to identify plants or parts of a plant that demonstrate no discoloration or reduced discoloration compared to a reference plant or a part of a plant.
