FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: in the first version the method involves formation of a 2D image of the water surface with the help of an optical system with the horizon line and part of the sky captured at small sight angles. One registers 1D images (that are further converted into a series of numeric values) with the help of a CCD photodiode line. By brightness differential one determines the horizon line position that is taken as the reference. Perspective distortions are corrected by way of transfer to an equidistant range grid. A spatio-temporal image is built of the 1D images. The wave surface kinematic characteristics are determined by the period and slant of such waves displays in the spatio-temporal image of the water surface for using a dispersion equation for surface waves. In the second version one uses two optical systems with varied directions of survey and registers 1D images with the help of two CCD photodiode lines. The wave surface kinematic characteristics are determined by two spatio-temporal images without usage of a dispersion equation for surface waves.
EFFECT: real-time determination of surface waves kinematic characteristics from either a stationary base or a moving carrier.
