SUBSTANCE: method of identifying atoms and molecules according to the invention involves detection of ion current peaks on drift spectra, which is carried out for at least three amplitude values of the output voltage of a high-voltage generator Ud; from all peaks selected on the drift spectrum, K groups of peaks are selected, where K is a whole number greater than zero, where in each group of peaks the number of positions of peaks on the compensation voltage scale Ucm for each generator voltage value Ud satisfies the relationships where M=29 - the average molecular weight of an air molecule, m0=18 - molecular weight of water molecules, M0,K is the molecular weight of an ion, n and m assume values 0, 1, 2, …, and change in the position of peaks Ucm.max.n in each selected group of peaks K for different voltage values of the high-voltage generator Ud satisfies the relationship where an, bn and cn are constants equal to zero or a positive or negative number, wherein ion molecular weight M0,K is determined using the first relationship for each group of peaks K, and the second relationship is used to determine constants an, bn, cn for each type of ions in the group K, the values of which, based on geometric parameters of the drift spectrometer and the shape of pulses of the high-voltage generator, are used to determine relative values of parameters of linear drift mobility of ions.

EFFECT: high accuracy of identifying atoms and molecules owing to identification of peaks of the fine structure of drift spectra and determination of an additional identification parameter of ions, atoms and molecules, ie, their relative molecular mass.
