FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: method of determining mechanical stress involves measuring the algebraic difference of primary stresses using a magnetoelastic transducer in given points of a coordinate grid on the surface of the article. The direction of primary stresses is determined and the tensor component of the stresses is calculated using boundary conditions on a free contour with minimisation of the magnetoelastic transducer error. A plate is made from the material of the investigated article. A plate for compensating for distortion of the magnetic field of the sensor is made in form of a half-disc with thickness of not less than 2 mm. The plate is attached by the flat side of a rib edge-to-edge, flush with the surface of the article to its butt-end using a filled adhesive such that the centre of the radius of the plate coincides with the exit point of the median line of the coordinate grid into the free contour. Measurements are taken on the article using the sensor, starting from points lying from the free contour at a distance of not less than half the value of the measuring base of sensor.

EFFECT: increasing measurement accuracy by cutting the width of the zone of the free contour of the article in which measurement results of boundary conditions are distorted.
