FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: ultrasonic testing equipment includes a linear matrix ultrasonic sensor in which a plurality of transducers is arranged in a direction which is orthogonal to the direction of rolling of the test object, and a signal processing unit. The signal processing unit performs steps (1) to (6), where at the first step (1) the unit forms an image based on aperture synthesis of test signals of each section of the test object, at the second step (2), the unit forms the distribution of maximum values of test signals in the direction where the transducers lie, at the third step (3), the unit calculates the defect width in each section based on the distribution of maximum values, at the fourth step (4), the unit forms distribution of maximum values of test signals in the direction of rolling based on the distribution of maximum values of the plurality of sections of the test object, at the fifth step (5), the unit calculates the defect length based on the distribution of maximum values of test signals in the direction of rolling, at the sixth step (6), the unit calculates the defect surface area based on the calculated defect length and the calculated defect width for each section.
EFFECT: possibility of measuring surface area of a defect passing in the direction of rolling of the test object with high accuracy and using a simple method.
