FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: to set up sensitivity and checking working condition of a flaw detector, test sections of a bar of length 5, 250 and 500 mm, respectively, having controlled diametre with known coefficient of attenuation Ktest of ultrasound at the frequency of the used transducer, made from material with the same composition as that of the controlled bar, having a given submicro-crystalline flawless internal structure, are used, wherein the diametre of the transducers must be in the range of 0.8-1 times the diametre of the rod; at the first step a conditional 'zero' is determined by measuring signal attenuation at the 5 mm long test section, further, the value of signal attenuation on 250 and 500 mm test sections is measured taking into account the conditional 'zero', the coefficient of attenuation Ktest1 is then determined by calculating the ratio of signal attenuation at the test section of the bar to the length of that bar, the flaw detector is ready for operation if Ktest1 determined by measuring each test specimen differs from Ktest known for each test specimen by a value which does not exceed a tolerance level; further signal attenuation for the controlled bar is measured and the coefficient of attenuation Kcont for the said bar is calculated, from which the quality of the bar is determined.

EFFECT: simple method of determining crystallographic texture.
