FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method involves directing flux of the measured tetrahertz radiation from a source of tetrahertz radiation simultaneously with flux of optical pumping radiation from an optical pumping source at the given wavelength onto a nonlinear-optical crystal for parametric mixing of incident waves of said radiations. Signal optical radiation is generated at the output of said crystal at new frequencies which are shifted relative the pumping frequency, which is picked up by using a polarising prism to filter noise optical radiation at other frequencies, directions and polarisations which are different from the frequency, direction and polarisation of the signal radiation which matches the measured terahertz radiation spatially, spectrally and on polarisation. The signal optical radiation or separate modes thereof thus picked is transmitted to a photodetector for measurement in arbitrary units of the power of the picked up signal radiation at an open gate, where the measured terahertz radiation is emitted, and at a closed gate, where the measured terahertz radiation is completely shut off.
EFFECT: simplification of the process of detecting electromagnetic waves in the tetrahertz range.
