FIELD: information technology.

SUBSTANCE: wireless communication device with a hybrid automatic repeat-request (HARQ) mechanism, comprising: apparatus for storing signal data for a previously received HARQ transmission having an incorrect decoded message; a Type A combiner located before a signal inverse mapping unit for generating HARQ combined signal data at a first location along a receiver processing path; a type B combiner located immediately after the signal inverse mapping unit for generating HARQ combined signal data at a second location along the receiver processing path downstream of the first location; and apparatus for selecting one of Type A and Type B combiners for use in generating HARQ combined signal data, wherein the HARQ combined signal data are based on signal data for a currently received HARQ transmission and the signal data for the previously received HARQ transmission having the incorrect decoded message.

EFFECT: reduced HARQ buffer size required and more benefit from combining compared to the conventional HARQ combining method.
