FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: when realising versions of the method, a sample is held in a sample holding device. The method comprises steps for: obtaining, using an imaging device, a plurality of images of the sample in different focal planes in the sample holding device; analysing images using an image analyser in order to identify which, if any, of the particles of the sample are displayed in the focus in each image, and analysing those particles which are identified as displayed in the focus; wherein a plurality of images is obtained in different, essentially parallel focal planes, said planes being separated from each other by a distance shorter than 10 mcm. Apparatus for use in accordance with said versions of the method are also disclosed.
