FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: method involves measuring not less than eighteen components of induction of constant magnetic field over the pipeline using three-component sensors while moving said sensors along the pipeline, building a matrix of differences between induction values of the constant magnetic field and determining standard deviation values of the measured components of the matrix of differences from their average values. Simultaneously, not less than nine components differences between values of induction of the constant magnetic field and not less than six components of the rate of change of differences between values of induction of the constant magnetic field are measured. A variable magnetic field and a variable electric field are excited in the region of the pipeline, and induction of the variable magnetic field and strength of the variable electric field are measured simultaneously with the induction of the constant magnetic field, wherein sensors of the constant magnetic field, variable magnetic field and variable electric field are combined. Measurement results undergo preliminary statistical processing and areas of the pipeline for subsequent processing are selected based on a set of features. The location and magnetic moments of sources of anomalies of the constant and variable magnetic fields and parameters of defects of the insulation of the pipeline are determined and features of the technical state of the pipeline are identified and ranked based on the obtained data.
