FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic chemistry, particularly to a method of producing 1,3-dibromoadamantane which is widely used in production of heat- and chemical-resistant polymers, as raw material in producing medicinal agents, antistatic agents, softening agents and in synthesis of other adamantane derivatives (amines, alcohols, acids, nitriles, amides etc). The method involves bromation of adamantane with tetrabromomethane CBr4 under the effect of a catalyst Fe3(CO)12 at 150-160°C for 7-10 hours with molar ratio [adamantane]:[CBr4]:[Fe3(CO)12]=100:150-200:1-3. Under optimum conditions with complete conversion of adamantane 90-99%, the only reaction product is 1,3-dibromoadamantane.
EFFECT: obtaining 1,3-dibromoadamantane.
