FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of carbon articles and materials and is meant for protecting articles operating in oxidative medium conditions at high temperatures from oxidation. The method of producing protective coatings on articles with a carbon-containing base involves formation on the surface of the article of a slurry coating based on a composition consisting of a mixture of fine powder of carbon and silicon-inert filler and a polymer binder, heating the article in silicon vapour in the closed volume of a reactor with subsequent ageing and cooling. The silicon-inert filler used is SiC and/or B4C and/or AlN and/or mixture thereof with HfB2 and/or ZrB2 and/or TiB2. The article is heated in silicon vapour at pressure 1-36 mm Hg, 1-100 mm Hg, 1-250 mm Hg, 1-400 mm Hg, 1-550 mm Hg, 1-780 mm Hg in an argon medium at temperature 1500-1550°C, 1550-1600°C, 1600-1650°C, 1650-1700°C, 1700-1750°C, 1750-1800°C, respectively, while holding in said temperature intervals and pressure for 1-3 hours, after which the article is cooled in silicon vapour.

EFFECT: high heat resistance of the coating.
