FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: in the method of determining the position and/or measuring the position of a measuring object relative a detecting element (3), the detecting element (3) is preferably a coil (6) of the detecting element (3), which is supplied with alternating current, wherein through a magnet (4), provided for the measuring object (2), in a magnetically soft film (8) whose magnetic permittivity varies under the effect of a magnetic field depending on the intensity of the magnetic field and which is located in the sphere of influence of the detecting element (3), change in magnetic permittivity of the film (8) is induced and change in magnetic permittivity of the film (8) is determined based on its reverse action on the detecting element (3), from which the position of the measuring object (2) relative the detecting element (3) is determined and/or measured. A compensating coil (7), which is excited with direct current, generates a magnetic field through which magnetic permittivity of the film (8) or part of the film (8) is affected. The measuring device is made accordingly.

EFFECT: high accuracy and simple design of the device.
