SUBSTANCE: magnetic detection system, having a plurality of magnetic field generators and a plurality of magnetic field detectors, lying near the detection zone, and a control system which is configured to excite a magnetic field using the generators, and measuring the excited magnetic field for each of the generators using each of the detectors, a processing means configured to process measurements to form a plurality of data sets characterising the detection zone when an object moves through the detection zone, and merging the data sets to form a resultant data set, and a means of determining shift, which is configured to detect shift of the part of the object from the reference position, wherein the processing means is configured to make shift adjustments when merging data sets.
