SUBSTANCE: reliable protection is provided by employing internal interconnection between a plurality of components of different levels inside an information signal during protection thereof using a FEC protocol. In particular, components of the information signal bearing information content at a higher level must be associated with redundant information which depends not only on that part of the given component which does not overlap with the corresponding overlapping lower level component. It is more preferable that redundant information also depends on the last fragment, while increasing the probability of successful elimination of distortions in a higher level component at the receiving side.
