SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means of requesting and obtaining data segments. A client device receives a file for displaying a multimedia representation, wherein said file contains a display identifier for display, file indices and construction rules of the file identifier, wherein the file index is assigned to a segment and includes a segment serial number in the display of the multimedia representation. The construction rules of the file identifier provide information which enables the client device to dynamically construct file identifiers with the required media and with associated metadata using the display identifier and one or more file indices. The client device constructs one or more file identifiers of multimedia representation segments using one or more of the construction rules of the file identifier, the display identifier and one or more file indices. A request for a multimedia representation segment is sent to a multimedia delivery system, wherein the request contains a constructed filed identifier from the one or more constructed file identifiers.
