FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method consists of steps where dust in the insulation is collected and weighed and its chemical composition is analysed to determine the amount of metal; the amount of metal dust accumulated in the body of the electric locomotive is summed up; the amount of metal dust accumulated in the motors is considered proportional to the amount of metal dust collected from the body of the electric locomotive; the remaining life of insulation of the motor is considered constant on the maximum amount of the accumulated metal dust; and the remaining life of insulation is calculated as the difference between the remaining life of insulation of the motor and the product of the constant and the amount of metal collected from the body of the electric locomotive. An X-ray fluorescence technique is used to analyse chemical composition.
EFFECT: possibility of estimating the remaining life of insulation of an electric motor to enable timely repair thereof in order to restore insulation.
