FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to measurement of cross-sectional contours which perpendicularly intersect with a preliminary longitudinal axis of a log, by determining distance from the preliminary longitudinal axis of the log to a set of points on its outer surface on a circle using an apparatus for measuring the three-dimensional geometry of the log. The disclosed method is realised by that linear light beams are emitted from several light sources lying at several points, said light beams being continuous in the longitudinal direction of the log and parallel its preliminary longitudinal axis towards said axis. The log on which the linear light beams fall is photographed using imaging means and a computer, which obtains information on positions of the linear light beams in images taken by the imaging means, determines distance from said measurement points, lying through given length intervals along the preliminary longitudinal axis, to measurement points where the linear light beams fall on the peripheral surface of the log.
EFFECT: high accuracy of measuring the three-dimensional geometry of a log using laser type light-emitting devices and imaging devices.
