SUBSTANCE: optical device has a multimode fibre for transmitting single-mode laser light; a randomiser for randomising spatial modes supported by the fibre, and means of averaging the randomised spatial modes in order to restore the single spatial mode. A linear frequency modulation quantum-cascade laser outputs a wavelength chirp to enable wavelength scanning.
EFFECT: eliminating restrictions on the length of the multimode fibre, preventing occurrence of optical interference noise, reduced loss and higher tolerance for alignment between elements.
