FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: hyperspectral sensor or imager has a laser for illuminating an object and a two-dimensional detector for detecting light emitted by the laser and transmitted through the object. The laser is a chirped laser which is designed to output multiple chirped pulses having different wavelength ranges, the multiple chirped pulses being merged to form an extended continuous spectrum for illuminating the object.

EFFECT: simple design, improved sensitivity and dynamic range.
