FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to radar. In a known method of detecting and tracking a target, based on that, in addition to adaptive surveillance of the monitored space by a radar station, energy is received in the frequency band of external radio electronic means; when inspecting directions with high level of noise in the range of external radio electronic means, a decision is made on pre-detection of a target which is then taken for pre-tracking by inserting a pre-tracking gate, if the level of the received radar signal is below the detection threshold but higher than an additional threshold set such that the number of pre-tracked targets does not exceed the number of channels allocated for pre-tracking, and during each signal reception in the pre-tracking gate, the probability of false alarm is calculated and if said probability drops to an acceptable value, a decision on detection of a target in that gate is taken, which is then transferred to a tracking gate.
EFFECT: longer target detection range and longer range for locking on its path.
