SUBSTANCE: disclosed is an ultrasonic transducer (12, 42) for forming diagnostic images. Said ultrasonic transducer (12, 42) has a housing (24, 54), multiple antenna arrays (30, 32, 60, 62) of the ultrasonic transducer for obtaining data images, a transducer controller device (36, 66), a selection means (34, 64) for indicating to the transducer controller device (36, 66) the selected one of the multiple antenna arrays (30, 32, 60, 62) of the ultrasonic transducer for obtaining image data and a communication device (16, 70) for sending ultrasonic image data and for receiving data for transmission in wave form and/or control data. The ultrasonic transducer (12, 42) can also include a multiplexer (38) and/or a microbeam forming device (68). Antenna arrays (30, 32, 60, 62) of the ultrasonic transducer for obtaining image data may be of different types, may have different operational characteristics and/or different operating modes.

EFFECT: enabling ultrasonic inspection using different types of antenna arrays of an ultrasonic transducer for obtaining image data without the need to change the transducer and without the need to store the transducer during inspection.
