SUBSTANCE: backlight system has a plurality of segments for selective illumination of a predetermined pixel region of the display device and is configured to selectively adjust intensity and/or colour of light emitted from a segment, each segment having a light source. The backlight system also has light barriers for restricting lateral propagation of light emitted by a light source to neighbouring segments. The light barriers denote grid lines of a grid, and the light source is located on the grid line which at least partly coincides with at least one of the light barriers.
EFFECT: design of backlight having a predetermined overlapping without the need for an additional thickness.
